The device (10) has a camera (18) arranged and oriented such that the camera captures image data of medical instruments e.g. scissors (58), is arranged on a support (16). A data processing system (14) is designed such that system uses an interface to receive image data from the camera. The system stores the received image data in a database and uses an evaluation unit to examine an image data for regions, which have anomalies, and to classify the regions. The evaluation unit determines whether the regions are respectively a regular part of the medical instrument or an anomaly.
