A topical anesthetic composition for topical use to anesthetize and coat nerve endings of an open wound of a subject, wherein the open wound is a laceration, surgical incision, abrasion, ulcer or burn, comprising: an effective amount of a first anesthetic agent local that has a rapid onset of action and an effective amount of a second local anesthetic agent that has a prolonged duration of action; a vasoconstrictor in an amount effective to reduce bleeding from the open wound and to decrease the rate of vascular absorption of local anesthetic agents in order to reduce the risk of systemic toxicity; an antiseptic agent; a detectable marker in the form of a dye to indicate the presence of anesthetic agents on the open wound; and a polyhydroxylated alcohol combined with a cellulose preparation as gelling agents, wherein said composition is in the form of a visibly colored, sticky, viscous spray gel that can cover the open wound and is capable of maximizing the supply of the active ingredients of the composition to the open wound when remaining moist and viscous when applied as a coating on said open wound, and where after the coating with the gel on the nerve endings in the wound, a numbness of the pain occurs after approximately 4 hours of independent form of anesthetic agents, thus contributing to improve the anesthetic effect of the composition.
