The use of a compound capable of inhibiting the formation of a functional MCM complex from MCM subunits in cancerous cells for the manufacture of a medicament for the treatment of cervical cancer, nasopharyngeal cancer or liver cancer. The use of a compound selected from the group consisting of 17 beta-deacetyl tanginine, 17 beta-neriiphorin and 17 beta-deacetyl tanginine diol. And a method of screening for anti-cancer compounds, comprising: (a) contacting a candidate compound with a population of cells for a period of time, and (b) the functional MCM complex formed from its subunits.
