The method of claim 2, wherein the inflammatory disease is lupus, sepsis, or inflammatory bowel disease. The method according to claim 2, wherein the level of angiopoietin-2 is used to regulate the course of treatment or select a new course of treatment. A method for selecting a course of treatment for a subject suffering from vascular leakage syndrome, comprising: a) administering to the subject an effective amount of a compound having the formula: i) ii) or iii) or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof; b) monitoring the level of angiopoietin-2 present in the subject's body treatment process; c) interruption of treatment when the level of angiopoietin-2 returns to its normal range. A method of stabilizing the vascular system in a subject infected with a pathogen, comprising administering to the subject an effective amount of a compound having the formula: i) ii) or iii) or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 7.
