PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide methods to identify cell membrane-associated polypeptides that are more abundantly expressed on one or more types of cancer cells as compared to on normal cells or on other different cancer cells and to use those polypeptides, and their encoding nucleic acids, to produce compositions of matter useful in the therapeutic treatment and diagnostic detection of cancer in mammals.SOLUTION: Cellular polypeptides (and their encoding nucleic acids or fragments thereof) are identified which are expressed to a greater degree on the surface of one or more types of cancer cells as compared to on the surface of one or more types of normal non-cancer cells. These polypeptides are herein referred to as Tumor-associated Antigenic Target polypeptides ("TAT" polypeptides) and are expected to serve as effective targets for cancer therapy and diagnosis in mammals.
