A method is disclosed for the production of a metal halide adduct of S4N4, in particular a copper bromide adduct of S4N4, which comprises reacting S2Cl2 with gaseous ammonia in a dry solvent to form S4N4, without purification adding the S4N4 to a solution of metal halide in alcohol, such as methanol, and stirring until no S4N4 remains. The dry solvent may be tetrachloromethane or tetrachloroethene. Also disclosed is a method for visualisation of a print on an object using S2N2 formed from the metal halide adduct, in particular a fingerprint on a metal object. Further disclosed is an apparatus for visualising a print on an object, using S2N2 obtained from the metal halide adduct.
