A wearable alarm device for detecting an individual’s condition comprises a controller, one or more movement sensors, and one or more human vital sign sensors. In normal use, the movement sensor is operative 17 and the vital sign sensors are switched off. Upon receipt by the controller of a trigger signal, from the movement sensor, the vital sign sensors are activated 21. The one or more human vital sign sensors may measure heart rate, blood pressure, blood oxygen (SPO2) level, or user temperature. One or more of the human vital sign sensors may be optical sensors. The device may communicate with a third party via a wireless communications network. The device may transmit and receive audio signals. Activation of a manual alarm activation button may cause the device to communicate with a third party. The device may be configured as a watch for wearing on a user’s wrist.
