Disclosed are compounds of formula (I), which may be antimicrobial. R1-R5 are each independently selected from H, a halogen, an optionally substituted C1-C4 alkyl group, an optionally substituted C1-C4 alkenyl group, and an optionally substituted C1-C4 alkoxy group. N is 3 to 19, Z is either a bond, methylene (CH2), sulfur (sulphur), oxygen or NH (secondary amine). Y is selected from a carboxylic acid, an amide, a sulfonic acid, a sulfonamide, a phosphonic acid or a heterocyclic group, or salts thereof. The compounds may be derived from carvacrol or thymol. The compounds may be useful as medicaments, particularly in the treatment of bacterial infections caused by antimicrobial resistant strains, and may be useful for disinfecting surfaces and/or medical devices. Most preferably, n is 10 and Y is carboxylic acid, or salt thereof (e.g. choline addition salt). Also claimed is a process for synthesising compounds of formula (I).
