The present invention relates to the field of medicinal chemistry. Disclosed herein is a crystalline form of azilsartan that is substantially pure. The crystal form is crystal form A, crystal form B, crystal form C, crystal form D, crystal form E, crystal form F, crystal form G, crystal form H, crystal form I, crystal form J or crystal form K. . The substantially pure crystalline form of azilsartan of the present invention generally has good properties such as high solubility, high bioavailability, high stability, long shelf life, and good antistatic properties. The crystalline form of azilsartan generally exhibits superior efficacy with respect to clinical systolic blood pressure (SBP) and average 24 hour SBP reduction. Disclosed herein are methods for producing substantially pure crystalline forms of azilsartan, pharmaceutical compositions containing the crystalline forms, and methods for making and using them.
