The present invention relates to a use of a novel compound 2-methoxy-4-(3-(4-methoxyphenyl)prop-1-en-1-yl)phenol for an anti-cancer purpose. The compound of the present invention can effectively inhibits growth of cancer cells and tumor both in vitro and in an heterograft animal model. The compound of the present invention suppresses DNA binding activities of transcription factor STAT 3 in cancer cells, and induces apoptosis of cancer cells while reducing expression of cell cycle regulatory protein, thereby showing anti-cancer activities.
