This invention relates to a compliance monitor for monitoring usage of a medicament delivery device. The medicament delivery device includes a store of medicament and a medicament dispensing means for delivering a dose of medicament. The compliance monitor includes a compliance monitor housing adapted to attach to the medicament delivery device, a dose detection means for determining when a dose of medicament is dispensed, and a recognition means for identifying the type of medicament delivery device attached to the compliance monitor. The recognition means includes an IR optical sensor and an electronics control module, which combine to determine if the prescribed medicament delivery device is attached to the compliance monitor, based on an analysis of the light reflection and/or absorption properties of the attached medicament delivery device.
