A universal/upgrading pulse oximeter (UPO) comprises a portable unit and adocking station together providingthree-instruments-in-one functionality for measuring oxygen saturation andrelated physiological parameters. The portable unitfunctions as a handheld pulse oximeter. The combination of the docked portableand the docking station functions as astand-alone, high-performance pulse oximeter. The portable-docking stationcombination is also connectable to, anduniversally compatible with, pulse oximeters from various manufacturersthrough use of a waveform generator. The UPOprovides a universal sensor to pulse oximeter interface and a pulse oximetermeasurement capability that upgrades theperformance of conventional instruments by increasing low perfusionperformance and motion artefact immunity, forexample. Universal compatibility combined with portability allows the UPO tobe transported along with patients transferredbetween an ambulance and a hospital ER, or between various hospital sites,providing continuous patent monitoring inaddition to plug-compatibility and functional upgrading for multiparameterpatient monitoring systems. The image on theportable display is rotatable, either manually when undocked or as a functionof orientation. In one embodiment, the dockingstation has a web server and a network interface that allows UPO data to bedownloaded and viewed as web pages over alocal area network or the Internet.
