A method of, and apparatus for, determining if a person operating equipment is experiencing an elevated cognitive load, wherein the persons use of a device at a first time is monitored so as to set a baseline signature. Then, at a later time, the persons use of the device is monitored to determine the persons performance at the second time, as represented by a performance signature. This performance signature can then be compared against the baseline signature to predict whether the person is experiencing an elevated cognitive load.
