The present invention relatesto a SP3D promotor sequence, capable ofdirecting transcription of a downstreamSP3D gene that is operably linked to saidpromotor sequence, wherein the promotorsequence is derived from a species of theSolanaceae family having a sympodial indexof 2, for reducing sympodial index in plantshaving a sympodial index of 3 or more.The invention also relates to methods forproviding plants of the Solanaceae family, inparticular S. lycopersicum, having a reducedsympodial index comprising of introducinginto the genome of said plants a promotorsequence according to any of the claims 1-8in operable linkage with a downstream SP3Dgene, or introducing into said plants a geneconstruct according to any of the claims 9to 15, such that the sympodial index of theplant with the promotor sequence or geneconstruct is reduced as compared to the plantwithout said promotor sequence or geneconstruct, and to plants obtainable by saidmethods.
