An antimicrobial composition comprising a chelating agent (such as EDTA and its salts) and a transport enhancer (such as methylsulfonylmethane； MSM) is provided. Both combinations of the two substances unexpectedly and beneficially inhibit bacterial or fungal biofilms when administered in the area of microbial infection. Preferred formulations include sprays, lotions, solutions, gels, creams, ointments, soaps, deodorants, surgical rinses, or dental rinses.
