The art surrounding endophytes and cultivar combinations is largely restricted to single cultivar and endophyte combinations. In the rare situations where more than one endophyte is present, this has been an unintended outcome. A focus on single endophytes and a search for an ideal endophyte to date has only resulted in non-ideal situations where the ability of the inoculated cultivar to withstand abiotic or biotic stress or not cause animal health issues is compromised. Methods are described herein for producing a sward, the sward comprising a first amount of cultivar inoculated with or already comprising a first endophyte and a further amount of the same cultivar inoculated with or already comprising a further endophyte, the sward having a predetermined or designed for aggregate alkaloid concentration. The sward is designed for, can be multiplied and can be designed in a predetermined manner to suit the abiotic and biotic stresses of a particular environment and animal health requirements.
