An apparatus (30, 90) a patient interface, comprising: a contact portion (64, 94) configured to direct engagement with the users skin during use of the patient interface device, wherein at least one section of the contact portion has a surface constructed comprising a plurality of predetermined non-random surface features (70, 76), each of which has a similar geometry, with a step section between each immediately adjacent pair of surface features (i) is the same yl and is an anisotropic pitch so that the pitch between each immediately adjacent pair of surface members in the first direction is equal to a first step size, and the pitch between each immediately adjacent pair of surface members in a second direction transverse to the first direction is equal to a second step value different from the first size step, and (ii) less than or equal to the predetermined maximum step size, wherein the predetermined maximum step size is one of the following: (i) 50 microns, (ii) or 100 microns (iii) greater yl and equal to 10 microns, but less than or equal to 100 microns, or step between each immediately adjacent pair of surface features is one of the following values: (i) greater than or equal to 10 microns, but less than or equal to 50 microns, or (ii) greater than or equal 20 microns, but less than or equal to 50 microns, with a section height of each of the surface elements is less than or equal to a predetermined maximum value vysoty.2.
