The invention relates to a method for configuring a failsafe module (15) which is connected to a field bus coupler (11) of an industrial automation system via a sub-bus (12) in order to transmit security-relevant data of the module (15) via a field bus (3), having the following steps: - ascertaining the type of security protocol (5) which is compatible with the field bus (3) by means of the field bus coupler (11); and - transmitting configuration instructions to the at least one failsafe module (15) by means of the field bus coupler (11) in order to adjust the use of the ascertained security protocol (5) type in the module (15). The invention further relates to a field bus coupler (11) or a system consisting of a field bus coupler (11) and at least one failsafe module (15) which is designed to carry out the method.
