The apparatus includes a self-expandable distal member (1) comprising a tubular structure (5) having a plurality of cells. The tubular structure being configured to assume a volume-enlarged configuration at a site of the thrombus in the cerebral blood vessel, and to be modified into a compressed configuration for delivery through a microcatheter (8). The compressed configuration having a smaller crosssectional dimension than the volume-enlarged configuration. The tubular structure being configured to expand into the thrombus when transitioning from the compressed configuration to the volume-enlarged configuration upon proximal withdrawal of the microcatheter from over the tubular structure. The tubular structure having a proximal end (3) and a distal end (2). The distal end of the tubular structure being configured such that at least an outer portion of the tubular structure engages and applies an outward radial force on at least a portion of the thrombus. The tubular structure interlocks with at least a portion of the thrombus. A proximal elongate member attached to the self-expandable distal member by a plurality of struts such that the proximal elongate member extends generally parallel to, and is offset from, a central longitudinal axis of the tubular structure.
