The syringe includes a generally cylindrical hollow barrel having a hollow nozzle at its distal end. The plunger with the open channel is slidably mounted within the barrel. A needle holder with a needle at one end is arranged in the channel of the plunger and is movable between a forward point where the needle protrudes from the distal end of the nozzle for scanning and a retraction point where the needle is received in the barrel once the scan is complete . The spring retainer is arranged in the barrel. The spring is located in the spring retainer and urges the needle holder toward the retraction point. The latch latches the needle holder into the spring retainer thereby keeping the spring in a compressed state.
