A medical instrument includes a handpiece (12), an electromechanicaltransducer (14) disposed in the handpiece (12) and an electrical circuit (100)disposed at least partially in the handpiece for supplying alternatingelectrical current of a predetermined frequency to the transducer (14). Aprobe is operatively connected to the transducer for transmitting vibrationsgenerated by the transducer to an operative site in a patient. A switchingdevice (98) is mounted to the handpiece and is operatively connected to thecircuit (100) and the transducer (14) for enabling the supply of power to thetransducer (14) during a motion of the probe in a preselected directionrelative to the handpiece (12) and for disabling the supply of power to thetransducer (14) upon a termination of motion of the probe in the preselecteddirection.
