A surgical instrument having a channel and comprising: a cartridge assembly； adrivemember configured to travel in a distal direction； and a lockout mechanismconfigured to preventlongitudinal translation of the drive member. The lockout mechanism comprises:a latchdisposed in mechanical cooperation with a portion of the channel and laterallymovable from aninitial position to a blocking position； and a spring configured to bias thelatch toward theblocking position. A shaped surface of the latch obstructs the distal movementof the drivemember when the latch is in the blocking position.
