The method comprises installing an electrolytic chlorine generating cell (14) in a filter compartment (13) of the spa (11). A resin-filled calcium remover bag (10) is placed in the spa (11) to reduce the hardness of the water. Salt is added to the water to produce a saline solution of reduced hardness and the spa is operated to generate chlorine from the salt water. Reducing the hardness of the water reduces build-up of scale on the electrodes of the chlorine generating cell (14).
