Disclosed is the use of placental stem cells in the preparation of a medicament for suppressing an immune response, wherein said placental stem cells detectably suppress T cell proliferation stimulated by Epstein-Barr virus antigen-presenting B cells, and wherein at least 80% of said placental stem cells express CD200 and HLA-G； express CD73, CD105, and C0200； express CD200 and OCT-4； or express CD73, CD105, and HLA-G； and wherein said immune response is an immune response against an allograft, an autoimmune disease, diabetes, lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, or multiple sclerosis, provided said placental cells are not totipotent.
