The invention relates to methods and compositions for identifying maize plants that have increased or decreased resistance to tropical rust. The methods use molecular markers to identify and select plants with increased resistance to tropical rust or to identify and counter-select plants with decreased resistance to tropical rust. Maize plants generated by the methods of the invention are also a feature of the invention. Also of interest are methods used to correlate allelic variation with a trait of interest.La presente invención se refiere a un método para seleccionar una planta de maíz con resistencia aumentada a la roya tropical, caracterizado porque comprende: a. detectar en la planta de maíz un primer alelo marcador que esté relacionado con y asociado con: i. la secuencia que se establece en la SEQ ID NO: 156； o ii. un haplotipo "GAG" en las posiciones 337-339 de la secuencia de referencia de la SEQ ID NO: 167； y b. seleccionar la planta de maíz que tenga el primer alelo marcador.
