The present invention relates to a method of vaccinating a patient against varicella zoster virus (VZV) by delivery of an effective amount of a live attenuated VZV vaccine to the epidermis or the dermis of a patients skin at a depth of between about 100 and about 700 microns from the surface of the skin, which is useful for preventing herpes zoster or reducing the severity or duration thereof. In embodiments of the invention, the patient is 50 years of age or older and has been previously exposed to VZV. The invention also relates to a method of preventing VZV infection in an individual who was not previously infected with VZV comprising administering an effective amount of a live attenuated VZV vaccine to the epidermis or the dermis of the individuals skin at a depth of between about 100 and about 700 microns from the surface of the skin.La présente invention concerne un procédé de vaccination dun patient contre le virus varicelle-zona (VVZ) par administration dune quantité efficace dun vaccin à VVZ vivant atténué dans lépiderme ou le derme de la peau dun patient à une profondeur située entre environ 100 et environ 700 microns par rapport à la surface de la peau, ce qui est utile pour prévenir lherpès zona ou réduire sa gravité ou sa durée. Dans les modes de réalisation de linvention, le patient est âgé de 50 ans ou plus et a été auparavant exposé au VVZ. Linvention concerne également un procédé pour empêcher linfection par le VVZ chez un individu qui na pas été auparavant infecté par le VVZ, consistant à administrer une quantité efficace dun vaccin à VVZ vivant atténué dans lépiderme ou le derme de la peau dun individu à une profondeur située entre environ 100 et environ 700 microns par rapport à la surface de la peau.
