The present invention relates to electromagnetic tracking of a medical device. In order to provide improved tracking of the medical device, a wireless reading unit 10 for the electromagnetic tracking system of the medical device is provided. The wireless reading unit includes a data input unit 12, a data processor 14, and a data output unit 16. The data input receives the raw signal 18 from the electromagnetic sensor and the data processor at least partially preprocesses the raw signal provided by the data input for further transformation. Furthermore, the data output unit is configured for data transmission of the at least partially preprocessed data to the control unit of the electromagnetic tracking system of the medical device.
