A blood collection tube holder assembly, comprising: a generally cylindrical housing having a distal end engageable with a needle assembly, a proximal end adapted to receive a blood collection tube, a sidewall extending between the proximal and distal ends, and an axial passageway extending through said distal end and having a peripheral surface the needle assembly having a piercing end, a non-piercing end and at least first and second engagement surfaces between said piercing and non-piercing ends for engaging said peripheral surface of said passageway, wherein said first and second engagement surfaces are axially disposed relative to one another with at least one of said engagement surfaces comprising a radially extending ring wherein said radially extending ring is engaged in a fluid tight interference fit against the peripheral surface of said passageway.
