A sustainable drinking water system comprising one or more troughs connected to a reservoir a first automatic flow control valve configured on an inlet conduit a second automatic flow control valve configured on a drain conduit a plurality of sensors configured on at least one wall of the troughs, wherein the plurality of sensors are configured to sense the presence of livestock, and generate a plurality of sensed signals and a controller cooperating with the plurality of sensors, the first automatic flow control valve and the second automatic flow control valve. The controller is configured to receive the plurality of sensed signals and control the operation of the first automatic flow control valve and the second automatic flow control valve, based on the plurality of sensed signals received. The sustainable drinking water system prevents stagnation of water inside the troughs.
