This invention relates to a novel method for growing attenuated mutantSalmonella typhi strains lacking galactoseepimerase activity and harboring a recombinant DNA molecule. The methodcomprises the step of culturing said Salmonella typhistrain without adding glucose to the medium during the fermentation with astarting glucose amount that is depleted before reachingthe stationary phase. The invention further relates to attenuated mutantSalmonella typhi strains obtainable by said method and to anattenuated mutant Salmonella typhi strain harboring a recombinant DNA moleculeencoding a VEGF receptor protein for use as avaccine.
