The invention relates to a 2,4-dihydroxy-3-methylbenzoate of the generalformula:(see above formula)wherein R1 represents C1 to C4 alkyl, and R2 is hydrogen, methyl, ethyl orpropyl. In particular,the invention relates to a method for isolating atraric acid from biologicalmaterial, atraric acidderivatives, the chemical synthesis thereof, and the use of atraric acid andthe derivativesthereof for the treatment of or the production of a medicament for treatingbenign prostatehyperplasia, prostate carcinoma or spinobulbar muscular atrophy and as a basicsubstance forthe development of other agents used for treatment of benign prostatehyperplasia, prostatecarcinoma, or spinobulbar muscular atrophy.
