An ophthalmic instrument, such as a retinoscope, for use in the inspection of an eye under examination, by a process of projecting an elongate patch of light into or onto the eye, comprises a light source 2, such as an LED, for generating light to constitute the patch, one or more projection elements 6, 10 for projecting said light into the eye and a mask or graticule 12, situated between the source and said one or more projection elements, the mask 12 having an aperture (14, Fig 5) which is illuminated by light from the source 2, in use, so as the define the patch. The light source and mask may form part of an illumination module which may, in turn, be retrofittable to a retinoscope designed for use with a filament lamp.
