A magnetic resonance visible label includes a substrate having a first and asecond side； and a plurality of indicia located on the first side of thesubstrate. Theindicia include a surface area having magnetic resonance properties that aredifferent from magnetic resonance properties of the substrate such that thepluralityof indicia are capable of being imaged with a magnetic resonance imagingsystem.The plurality of indicia are arranged in a pattern such that the patternencodesinformation about an object being imaged with the MRI system. The plurality ofindicia include at least one of a plurality of beads or a plurality of dotsthat arespaced apart using a spacing that represents a binary encoding of information,wherein the information encoded by the plurality of indicia when arranged inthepattern includes spatial orientation information that defines a spatialorientation of themagnetic resonance visible label.
