A method of generating a customized haptic boundary based on a patient-specific anatomical structure includes establishing a standard haptic boundary based on a geometric shape of the virtual implant model to be implanted on the anatomical structure. The method also includes establishing a reference feature associated with the virtual implant model, and determining a common portion between the established reference feature and a virtual model associated with the anatomical structure of the patient. The anatomical perimeter of the intersection between the set reference feature and the virtual model of the anatomical structure is determined on a virtual model of the anatomical structure.
