Antimicrobial foams and methods of making same. The antimicrobial foams can include a polymeric foam having a wet out time of at least 250 sec and a coating comprising an antimicrobial material. The antimicrobial material can include a quaternary ammonium compound and the antimicrobial material can be covalently bound to the foam. The antimicrobial foam can include at least 0.25 parts by weight of quarternary ammonium compound per 100 parts by dry weight of the foam. The method can include providing the polymeric foam and an antimicrobial material comprising a quaternary ammonium precursor. The method can further include combining the foam and the quaternary ammonium precursor to form a combination and heating the combination to a temperature of at least 40 �C to form an antimicrobial foam comprising a quaternary ammonium compound covalently bound to the foam.
