The invention relates to compositions comprising doses of lipoic acid-basedcompounds, and uses for same. The compositions provided by the presentinvention comprise10µM to 250 µM of lipoic acid, lipoic acid derivatives, and/or lipoicacid seleno-derivatives,and are used for preventing or treating oxidation damage to ocular cells,decreasing elasticityof a human lens, and/or treating or preventing presbyopia. The compound can be5-(1,2-dithiolan-3-yl)pentanoic acid, 6,8-dimercaptooctanoic acid,dihydrolipoate,5-(1,2-thiaselenolan-5-yl)pentanoic acid, 5-(1,2-thiaselenolan-3-yl)pentanoicacid, or a salt or esterthereof.
