An atherectomy device having a replaceable drive shaft is disclosed. The atherectomy device has a drive shaft gear at the distal end of the replaceable drive shaft for intermeshing engagement with the prime mover gear on the output shaft of the prime mover. The interchangeable drive shaft is inserted into the opening at the far end of the handle housing and moved axially in the proximal direction.
