The mechanism for establishing the orientation of the pelvic bone water includes a tripod, which is provided with an angularly adjustable guide rod thereon. The tip portions of the leg portion form a plane and the guide rod is set by the surgeon in the desired orientation for this plane based on preoperative studies. In use, two of the legs of the instrument are positioned by the surgeon at a defined anatomic location on the pelvis (e.g., a point within the posterior / lower glenohumeral region and a point on the proximal spinal pole). The third leg portion is then positioned on the pelvis at a point determined by the position of the first two points, as well as by the distance between the third leg portion and the other two leg portions. This distance is adjustable, but is preferably a determined percentage of the distance between the first leg portion and the second leg portion.
