Disclosed herein is the use of an extract from Alpinia spp. for the preparation of a medicament for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The extract is prepared by extracting fresh and/or dried fruits of Alpinia spp. plant with a solvent such as a supercritical fluid, water, 10-95% (v/v) ethanol, acetone, ethyl acetate or n-hexane, to obtain an extract suitable for the preparation of IBS medicaments. In some embodiments, active compounds with anti-abnormal defecation activity and/or analgesia effect are isolated from the water extract of Alpinia spp.； these compounds are therefore potential lead compounds for use as medicaments for treating IBS.L'invention concerne l'utilisation d'un extrait d'Alpinia spp. pour préparer un médicament permettant de traiter le syndrome du colon irritable (IBS). L'extrait est préparé par extraction de fruits frais et/ou secs d'une plante Alpinia spp. au moyen d'un solvant, tel qu'un fluide supercritique, de l'eau, 10 à 95% (v/v) d'éthanol, de l'acétone, de l'acétate d'éthyle ou un n-hexane, afin d'obtenir un extrait approprié pour préparer des médicaments IBS. Dans certains modes de réalisation, des composés actifs à activité de défécation anti-anormale et/ou à effet analgésique sont isolés de l'extrait d'eau d'Alpinia spp., ces composés étant des composés de référence potentiels utilisés en tant que médicaments pour traiter IBS.
