The invention includes the administration of a remyelination agent that treats demyelinating conditions such as MS. Various myelin regeneration compositions are disclosed that facilitate the treatment of demyelinating conditions such as myelination, oligodendrocyte differentiation, and MS. In one embodiment, the remyelination composition is a selective estrogen receptor modulator having myelin regeneration properties. In one embodiment, the remyelination composition is an agent of GPR56, a G protein coupled receptor that has not been previously identified as an effector of remyelination.
