The present invention provides modified kraft pulp fibers having unique properties. Modified fibers may be modified bleached kraft fibers that are substantially indistinguishable from their conventional counterparts, except that they have a low degree of polymerisation (DP). The present invention also provides a method of making modified fibers and products made therefrom. The process may be a one-step acidic, iron-catalyzed peroxide treatment process that may be incorporated into a single step of a multi-stage bleaching process.
