A sucrose-free, non-cariogenic, non-laxative chewing gum composition containsa bulking agent having at least 25wt.% of a water-soluble dietary fiber polysaccharide component, and at least25 wt.% of a water-soluble non-cariogenic,non-laxa-tive crystalline C4-6 mono-saccharide, or a mono-saccharidederivative, or a disaccharide containing C4-6 saccharide units, as abulking agent component. Such a combination of bulking agent componentsproduces an advantageous balance of beneficialdi-etary fiber and sucrose-free components, while creating a chewing gum withan acceptable or superior non-slimy mouthfeel.
