A CMUT transducer cell suitable for use in an ultrasonic CMUT transducer array has a membrane having a first electrode, a substrate having a second electrode, and a cavity between the membrane and the substrate. The CMUT is operated in a pre-collapsed state by biasing the membrane to the bottom of the cavity and the collapsed condition, and the lens is cast onto the collapsed membrane.
