The present invention provides a method of using meloxicam to provide analgesia or control inflammation in sheep wherein the method comprises administering the sheep a therapeutically effective amount of a formulation containing pharmacologically acceptable meloxicam or meloxicam salt. More preferably the method involves administering it to sheep undergoing a painful surgical procedure including one or more of: (i) tail docking, (ii) castration, (iii) muiesing. The formulations provided are adapted for administration via the oral and buccal route and preferably administered to the sheep is in the range of 0.25mg/kg to 1.Omg/kg of bodyweight of the sheep.
