The invention relates to dexmedetomidine, medetomidine or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof for use in a method of treating separation anxiety in companion animals, particularly dogs, comprising administering to a subject in need thereof an effective amount of said compound as the active ingredient. The active ingredient is preferably administered oromucosally, e.g. in the form of an oromucosal gel.
