The present invention relates to a container for an aerosol generating substrate, the container having a penetrating region for use in an electrically heated aerosol generating device having a penetrating element for penetrating the penetrating region. The container includes a casing and a cap that includes a penetration region and a heater, the heater defining a boundary of the penetration region. The present invention provides an apparatus for connecting a power source, a recess for receiving a container containing an aerosol-forming substrate as described in any claim, and connecting the power source to a container heater through the electrical contacts of the container. And a means for penetrating the penetration region of the container when the container is received in the recess. A method of manufacturing a container containing an aerosol generating substrate is also disclosed.
