PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and a method capable of precisely applying a composition to skin, hair shafts, and other keratinous surfaces.SOLUTION: An apparatus for modifying keratinous surfaces comprises: a rotatable applicator 20 in fluid communication with a first modification composition 16 a sensor 24 and a CPU 32. The sensor is displaced forward of the applicator such that as the applicator rotates across keratinous surfaces 12, 14, the sensor reads portions of the keratinous surfaces in front of the rotating applicator. While the applicator rotates across the keratinous surfaces, the sensor reading is transferred to the CPU, and the CPU analyzes the sensor reading of the keratinous surfaces. The CPU sends a signal to an applicator head to treat or not to treat the analyzed surface.
