PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact and inexpensive optical element which can pick up omnidirectional images in directions substantially orthogonal to a center axis, is less in image deformation, has a satisfactory F-&theta characteristic, and has high resolution, and to provide an optical system with the optical element, and an endoscope using the optical system.
SOLUTION: The optical element is composed of a transparent medium L1, which has a field angle of approximately 180° within a cross-section including the center axis L, and whose refractive index being rotation symmetrical around the center axis L is >1. The transparent medium L1 includes: a first transmissive face 11 disposed on the outermost circumference relative to the center axis L a first reflecting face 12 disposed closer to the center axis L than to the first transmissive face 11 a second reflecting face 13 disposed opposite the image surface 10 rather than the first reflecting face 12 and a second transmissive face 14 disposed on the side of the image surface 10 rather than on the side of the second reflecting face 13. A luminous flux made incident to the transparent medium L1 composes an approximately Z-shaped optical path A exiting the image face 10 through the first transmissive face 11, first reflecting face 12, second reflecting face 13, and second transmissive face 14 in that order of normal ray tracing.
