An orthopaedic surgical instrument assembly (10) includes an orthopaedic surgical instrument (14) including a first surface (104), and a measurement gauge (12) removably coupled to the orthopaedic surgical instrument. The gauge includes an arm (22) having a tip (44) positioned proximal to the orthopaedic surgical instrument, and a plurality of markings (80) defined on the arm. Each marking indicates a predetermined distance from the first surface of the orthopaedic surgical instrument. The assembly may be used during an orthopaedic surgical procedure on a femur, which is also described herein.
