We describe an apparatus and method for generating neutrons for applications such as boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT). The apparatus may include a rotary fixture having a coolant inlet and a coolant outlet and a plurality of neutron generating segments. Each neutron generating segment of the plurality of neutron generating segments includes a substrate removably coupled to the rotary fixture and having a coolant channel circuit defined therein and a solid neutron source layer disposed thereon.
